About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s West Loop, Au Cheval stands as a beacon for lovers of classic American diner cuisine with an elevated twist. Specializing in hearty, crave-worthy dishes, this celebrated spot is best known for its legendary cheeseburgers, which have earned a devoted following and deserve every ounce of their high praise.

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a warm, vibrant atmosphere that perfectly blends retro diner charm with a lively, modern vibe. The rich mahogany accents, ambient lighting, and carefully curated music create an inviting setting that pulses with energy without ever feeling overwhelming. It’s the sort of place where time slows down just enough for you to savor every bite and sip.

Speaking of bites, the menu is where Au Cheval truly shines. Their single and double cheeseburgers are masterpieces of flavor—juicy, richly seasoned patties cooked to perfection and layered with buttery, fresh buns, tangy pickles, and their signature sauce that adds just the right balance of zest and creaminess. For those willing to indulge further, the double cheeseburger with three patties is a towering, carnivorous delight that satisfies even the heartiest appetite.

But Au Cheval’s offerings extend far beyond the burger. The Crispy Fries with Mornay Sauce, Garlic Aioli & Fried Farm Egg deliver an irresistible combination of textures and flavors; creamy, cheesy sauce coats golden fries while the fried egg adds a luscious richness. The General Jane’s Honey-Fried Chicken offers a succulent balance of crispy crust and juicy meat, sweetened by a delicate honey glaze. For adventurous palates, the Crispy Duck Heart Hash and Roasted Marrow Bones with Beef Cheek Marmalade & Toast provide bold, deeply comforting depth with every bite.

The brunch menu is equally compelling, featuring luxurious options like Foie Gras Scrambled Eggs & Toast and a fresh Kale Caesar salad, expertly crafted to satisfy diverse tastes. Cocktail lovers will appreciate well-mixed classics such as the Bloody Mary and the nuanced Hemingway Daiquiri, which perfectly complement the hearty fare.

Customer reviews consistently highlight the exceptional quality and authenticity of Au Cheval’s food. Guests rave that the burgers are juicy, perfectly balanced, and the epitome of classic American indulgence—nothing too fancy, just expertly executed traditional flavors that resonate with comfort and satisfaction. Despite the popularity that brings inevitable queues, the thoughtful, friendly service and efficient system of text alerts make the wait feel manageable. The cheeseburger at Au Cheval absolutely lives up to the hype.. juicy, rich, and perfectly balanced. The service was very good, fast, and friendly even though the place was packed. There was a bit of a queue, but it moved quickly — I just put my name down and got a text about 20 minutes later. The atmosphere and décor are great, warm, lively, and a little retro and the music adds to the fun vibe. Definitely worth the stop if you’re in Chicago and craving a top-tier burger experience.

Awesome place for a great burger! Recommend making a reservation or checking on occupancy since you might have to wait on rush hours. Juicy, tasty and enough hamburgers!!! Loved the fries!!! They have an outside sitting available but the real mood is in the inside! Our server took his time explaining the options and recommendations. All of them were on point. We were a party of 6 including 2 kids.

My husband has been wanting to have an Au Cheval burger for years, and our experience blew us away. They don't take reservations, and we did have to wait an hour and twenty minutes but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Au Cheval's burger is the absolute best burger either of us has had. It's not a frou frou burger - it's a traditional classic burger done perfectly. It's juicy but it doesn't make the bun soggy or wet. The dijonaise is a perfect sauce for this burger. The bacon is the best I've ever had. Every element of the burger harmonizes perfectly with the others. The fries and sauce are also stupendous. If there was some way to give more than 5 stars, I would. Side note: the bartender made me a fabulous Shirley Temple. Also a nice dude. If you're looking for a burger in the Midwest, you must hit up Au Cheval.

Incredibly solid and very large burger with great options for sides. Drink and cocktail list is good as well without being too large. All of the food we got was solid and of very high quality. Service was fast and we got our order fairly quickly. Only downside would be the amount of seating.

We had a waiting time of about 30 minutes, and it was well worth the wait. We ordered the double burger, which actually comes with 3 patties. It was huge! The burgers were delicious. Meat was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The buns were buttery and fresh. The sauce and pickles were spot on. The extra egg, which was supposed to be their signature touch, did not add much more flavor to the dish. But everything else was so good, that I think the egg didn’t play any part in it. The fries were great too. Here the egg makes a great contribution and adds to the flavors and textures. The aioli was awesome. The draft beer menu has a great selection. Many good options of local and international beers. Overall, a very good experience.

Oh wow. We were not prepared for the excellence. Randomly popped by on day two of my husband’s birthday trip to Chicago, and what a happy accident it was. We snagged a front row seat at the counter after a quick and worth it 30-minute wait, right next to the expo. As a food nerd (I’m sorry!) this was the perfect spot to watch all the action go down, and the food was even better than the well-oiled show displayed on the flattops. Upon learning that we were celebrating a birthday tomorrow, my hubby’s burger arrived with a lit candle, and a surprise ice cream was delivered at the end of the meal with the same. Two very nice touches that made the whole experience extra special. The food, my word, was SO GOOD. Burgers with perfect runny eggs (for which we watched a dude hand-center the yolks in each of a dozen tiny sauté pans), and bacon that is unmatched in flavor, texture, and seasoning. Every bite was a perfect bite. That is what life is all about. Service was on the money - everyone was clearly busy but we wanted for nothing and appreciated our waiter’s good humor and attention to detail. Pros all around, and the special touches meant a great deal. We need a nap now, but we can’t wait to return on our next trip to Chicago (or maybe Sunday morning before our flight back to NY). Thank you, Au Cheval!

WOW, WOW and WOW!!!!! whole new playing field for burgers! Au Cheval at this point is a Chicago Burger staple. For a basic burger it's definitely in top 10 in the city. I've been here maybe 8 times at this point. I always get the double cheeseburger with the egg and the thick cut bacon and fries. Every time It's cooked perfectly and it's always juicy, egg cooked perfect every time. I'm posting multiple pictures just to show you consistency so accurate. Oh my goodness it's mouth watering amazing! I mean just look at the pictures! i've also had the chicken wings, which were phenomenal. They definitely have a system down in the kitchen that makes the food super consistent and I love that, makes you wanna come back. Service was great we got chefs table seating so we were able to watch everything be prepared. It's in a cool west loop location, they are currently in a remodel, so keep that in mind... 100% recommend!

My experience at Au Cheval was absolutely amazing. First off, the atmosphere was such a nice, classy vibe. The whole restaurant was dimly lit as the environment was lively and comfortable. I added a few pictures and videos below to give you a glimpse of it. Secondly, the service was incredible. Our waitress was such a bubbly and kind person. She answered all of our questions and was very patient with us while we ordered. She also explained to us the most popular burger that people tend to order here. That was the burgers we all ordered, and is pictured below. Finally, the food itself was very delicious and visually pleasing. When our waitress gave us our burgers, just the sight of them was breathtaking. Taking a picture or video did not do it justice. Not only was it visibly delicious, but the burger itself was delectable. Every bite was filled with flavor and a surprise. The only thing was that we personally felt like it tasted better with ketchup, but that is up to personal preference. Also, we ordered some fries with an egg on top, and they were so very appetizing. I loved the side sauces that came with the fries. Absolutely incredible. Writing this review has made me hungry now. Regardless, this restaurant was up to my standards and I would recommend it to my friends and family.
